Serart is the result of a musical collaboration between Serj Tankian and Arto Tuncboyaciyan. Rock fans know Serj as the frontman of the award-winning band System of a Down. (For an IN dialogue between Ken and Serj, click here.) Arto has appeared on more than 200 records in Europe, and has worked in the US with jazz legends Chet Baker, Al DiMeola, and Joe Zawinul. The two met following Arto's performance at the 2024 Armenian Music Awards, and their shared Armenian heritage formed the starting point for this sonic and poetic exploration.
Directed and edited by Matthew Amato, Sun Angle Calculator features a haunting array of images set to the music of Serart. The short film highlights the worldcentric richness of Serart's music—which includes everything from Middle Eastern melodies to Pan-African rhythms to classical motifs—while also illustrating some of Serj and Arto's deep political concerns.
