INTEGRAL ECOLOGY
(reported by Sean Hargens)
Under the leadership of environmental philosopher Michael Zimmerman and the outdoor guide and scholar Sean Hargens, Integral Ecology has become one of the most active branches within Integral Institute. Since its inception in 2000 the Integral Ecology branch has been developing a viable and nuanced framework for honoring the myriad approaches to our environmental urgency and uniting the multiple schools of ecological thought and action. Michael and Sean have been working with a dedicated team of over a dozen ecologists, activists, and community leaders who have been applying the Integral Approach to their respective domains of environmental expertise. This core team of integral leaders recently met with Ken Wilber for a weekend of discussions exploring the current issues and future directions of Integral Ecology.
Michael and Sean are now co-authoring a seminal book entitled Integral Ecology: Consciousness, Culture, Nature, which aims to be a keystone in operationalizing the Integral Approach in the domain of ecology. This book will combine theory, illustrative examples, practical experience, and embodied exercises in a unique way: opening up a dialogue around what constitutes an Integral Ecology and how we might we collectively move towards such a comprehensive, balanced, and multivalent approach. In addition, Sean Hargens is in the process of editing a special double issue of Ervin Laszlo’s journal, World Futures. This issue will be a book length exploration of ten case studies of Integral Ecology applied.
Also, in October Sean Hargens is offering the first-ever ON-LINE COURSE IN INTEGRAL ECOLOGY. This 5-week course will provide students with an opportunity to learn how to apply the Integral Approach to ecology and environmental concerns.
